Abstract

GBS is a severe acute paralytic neuropathy with rapid progression usually occurring in post infections. In-spite of active medication it is associated with severe weakness, incomplete recovery and pain. Diagnosis from Ayurveda point of view depends on the presenting and associated complaint from simple gata-vata samprapti to that of marmabhigatha. With the similar background, a 53 yrs old female patient presented with the complaints of inability to walk without support, weakness in bilateral lower limbs and upper limbs, pain in both calf muscles and altered sensation of bilateral feet and arms. Diagnosis made was medasavrita vata based on the presenting complaints. As there is involvement of vata involving gambheera dhatu with avarana samprapti, initially treatment was intended to remove avarana and kapha medas vilayana. Hence ruksha vata shamaka chikitsa, deepana, pachana was planned. After the removal of ama and avarana, snehana, brumhana, rasayana line of treatment was adopted followed by shamana chikitsa. After 6 months of treatment in this concept, patient showed complete recovery of all the motor, sensory and sphincter deficits. In the management of neurological deficits, the correction of finer movement counts a lot in assessing the therapeutic benefit of the treatment and it is an important aspect for subjective assessment of improved quality of life. Hence in the present study, hand writing correction by the treatment was selected as an evidence for the same.
