Abstract

Pakshaghat comprises two terms: Paksha (representing half of the body) and Aghat (signifying loss of function). Ayurvedic literature abounds with textual references elucidating Pakshaghata extensively. Regarded as a condition primarily influenced by Vata Dosha, it typically manifests with unilateral loss of function or weakness, with variable facial involvement. The prognosis is multifaceted, considering age, strength, and Dosha involvement. In contemporary science, cerebral vascular accidents are chiefly responsible for functional impairment, bearing a significant resemblance to Pakshaghata. While modern medicine often addresses symptoms superficially, Ayurveda seeks to treat the underlying cause alongside symptoms. Ayurvedic disease management involves two main approaches: Samshodhana and Samshamana. Panchakarma is a Shodhana Pradhana therapy, encompassing five major procedures for body purification. Additionally, allied processes contribute to symptomatic relief by targeting affected areas directly. Vata vyadhi is prominent among the Ashta Maha Gada, with Pakshaghata esteemed among Vataja disorders. Notably, Pakshaghata's clinical manifestations bear resemblance to modern hemiplegia, often stemming from cerebral ischemia due to vascular pathology. Esteemed Ayurvedic scholars like Acharya Bhela consider Pakshaghata as one of the Asthi Majjagata Roga. Acharya Sushruta further elucidates the concept of Mastulunga Majja as synonymous with Majjadhara Kala. Nasya Karma emerges as a valuable therapeutic modality for Vatvyadhi, offering clinical efficacy in managing symptoms akin to Pakshaghata. This article endeavors to scrutinize the clinical efficacy of Nasya Karma in Pakshaghat management, drawing insights from prior research, classical Ayurvedic texts, and reputable publications.
